Therefore, the traditional individualistic concept of assessment needs to be re-addressed if student cooperation and collaboration are to be fostered.

Peer assessment, or self-assessment, is a process whereby students or their peers grade assignments or tests based on a teacher’s benchmarks. The practice is employed to save teachers time and improve students' understanding of course materials as well as improve their metacognitive skills. Rubrics are often used in conjunction with Self- and Peer-Assessment. How are peer assessment scores calculated? - Peer assessments are scored by criteria. The score for each criterion is the median (not the average) of the scores that each peer assessor gave that criterion.

Peer assessment refers to the students' evaluation of the work done by their classmates, using a set of assessment criteria determined by the instructor, most generally in the form of a rubric. Among the many criticisms directed at peer assessment is the difficulty of achieving acceptable levels of honest and reliable assessment results, which requires peer assessment to be seen as a means to improve the learning process rather than a goal in itself.
